Fire Gem Dragons are a colorful, flamboyant breed often found in hot climates, particularly around active volcanoes. Their broad tails store the flames they breathe, which are colored by the heavy amount of minerals in the water they drink. These dragons come in a variety of colors, and will collect shiny trinkets and stones that match their own coloration. Despite their hoarding tendencies, though, Fire Gem dragons are social and will often congregate in groups and show off their collections while fawning over the stones their friends and rivals have gathered, occasionally arranging trades.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Wikwaet is very picky about which stones he collects, spending much of his time evaluating the intensity of color and lack of flaws. He is known to discard stones that others would consider very good or sometimes trade a talonful of such stones (when he deigns to collect them) for one truly fabulous one. The smallness of his collection is actually quite handy because his mate, Jekea, loves to travel, and he carries his hoard with him wherever they go. They often end up far away from the Bleeding Hart volcanoes where Wikwaet hatched, but he minds neither the cold nor the wet so long as he has access to her humorous anecdotes.
