Valentine eggs are only seen once a year. Adults’ mating seasons are very short, usually spanning a few weeks in the mid-to-late winter. These dragons were once reputed to be omens of good luck in love.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Borne to the first 'Valentine' dragon of the Ran weyr, The Love Fool was simply named as such by her rather naive—if soberingly prophetic—mother, Heart-Shaped Valentine.

She lived up to her name. More a hopeless romantic than anything else, The Love Fool (who, despite her awkward name, has curiously never obtained a nickname) was easily and consistently swayed by the stoic hearts and mannerisms of wandering bachelors. While the males were only concerned with continuing their progeny with a rare female, The Love Fool would spend her time flippantly and pointlessly composing long and complex songs, aerial dances, and vast 'nests' of flower-petals in her attempts to court the wayward males. It has never worked.

Her heart never stays broken for long, however. The size alone of Preto Osso's clan keeps a steady traffic of wandering dragons, all searching for young and strong mates, passing nearby.
