Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. Its eyes glow brightly at night, and it enjoys attacking insects and small animals.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Little Broken Heart, sadly, will never mature to his full size.  His egg was knocked out of his mother's nest not long before hatching by Oceans of Fire; he kicked and clawed his way out of his eggshell only to show off an unnatural kink in his back.  Broken Heart remained small, and by the time he completely stopped showing any signs of growth, he was merely half the size of the frozen Black hatchlings tumbling around him.

His unusual disability hasn't stopped him from being overambitious and a terror to keep an eye on, however.  Heart spends many of his waking hours hobbling awkwardly after any of the Mints in the cave, begging them to play games or play-fight or share their food, until Heart-Shaped Valentine hunts him down and returns him to her nest for a generally unwelcome and certainly loudly complained-about nap.
