Sapphire Dragons were so named for their brilliant color, which is reminiscent of the gemstone. This breed was historically hunted for their scales; even long after, they remain distrustful of humans. Normally a Sapphire is not very aggressive, but they will defend themselves vigorously if under attack. Their diet consists mainly of fruit, with smaller portions of large insects and other invertebrates. Males woo females with vocalizations similar to bird songs. Sapphire Dragons are very loyal to their mates, and it is not unusual that they pair for life.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Velvet (named after a variety of sapphire) takes immense pride in his golden coat and grooms it religiously. As such, he despises anything filthy or odorous, fearing any violation to his scales. This vanity,  combined with his regal bearing, makes for a pompous and self-important dragon. But Velvet is not just a spoiled brat with a superiority complex, he's also bossy. Velvet prides himself a born leader, which, to be fair, is not inaccurate. He will guide those around him with astute directness, and his impressive size and look aid in making him not only sound but appear dominant. That said, while he works as a fine speaker, he is a pathetic fighter. Though Velvet is, as mentioned, quite large, very little of that size is owed to muscle. He is also inefficient with magic, and his Light spells are nothing more than worthless. It would be impossible to determine this, however, if he wouldn't get egged on by competitors, which he so despises. He hides his weakness masterfully otherwise.
