This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Cruelly named Zero at birth, Zero has fought of the prejudice that came with his name, proving himself to be a reliable and hardworking member of the cave. True, he will never run the fastest nor fly the longest, but his endurance and cheerful spirit give him a certain appeal which attracts dragons to him. While he is a hard worker Zero longs of having a special skill, that people will come to him and him alone for, so he can be needed for once and not just put up with. Life's cards are never fair unfortunately, and no matter how hard Zero works or tries he always finds somebody better or more skilled than him, leaving a cloud of sadness to accumulate over him as he wishes for one talent, just one special talent. Zero needs to be needed, so him not being necessary to any idea or purpose leaves him with little enthusiasm or motivation to do well, so he now wanders desolate, looking for something only he can do.
