Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Eschewing the naming conventions of the local black dragons, Savage Void's name is a simple combination of those of his parents (after translating them out of distortion back into the original words). This choice reflects Savage's practical but rather unimaginative personality. Dutiful and militant, he spends a lot of time with his adoptive grandparents. Savage is closer to his mother than to his odd, bookish father, but respects both of them—at least in theory. (In reality, deep down, he believes his father is weak, but he would never admit that, even to himself.) Savage is a regular member of border patrols and defensive parties sent to drive aggressive wild dragons or unwelcome humans out of the Breedery's lands.
