Pyralspite dragons are small, swift dragons that can breathe an intensely hot flame. They get their name from their resemblance to and affinity for garnets of the pyralspite family—they hoard such gems, preferring garnets that match their variant, and can tell the type of garnet from how it tastes. The red-violet variant is referred to as Almandine. Almandine Pyralspites are more aggressive than others of the same breed, and are very witty and love to mock or insult their opponents. They inhabit mountainous areas.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Like any Almandine Pyralspite, Gem is catty and vicious. She is exceptionally vain and spends the majority of her time tending to her lustrous coat. If not her scales, then her abundant collection of garnets, rubies, and spinels, though it's obvious bright pink garnets are her favorites. Gem has a very sassy demeanor. Nobody crosses her without gaining a verbal scar or two. For as hot as her fire is, nothing burns quite like her insults. She's ruthless to just about everyone, including her mate, Kimberly. Of course, Kimberly has always sort of accepted this, especially since he's pretty cheeky himself. The two of them share a friendly bond, and less of a romantic one. They talk like pals, gossip, and share secrets with one another like they were adolescents, but they always get along. Gem also relies on Kimberly to protect her, since he is a member of the famous Zyurangers, a group of dragon superheroes that travel the world.
