Moonstone Dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. They are nocturnal and gather energy through the absorption of moonlight with their orbs. They seem to glow with a lunar light and are a very gentle breed, feeding off of plants and the moons’ power.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

The Dark Moon's Omen was declared a Dark One in a public ceremony held in the Heart of the Moon, the deepest point of the Valley of the Moon. There, the Weyr's leader, the dragon Smoothstone, banished the Dark Moon's Omen and eight of his antecedents to the cold desert beyond the Valley of the Moon's safety. He called their blood tainted.

The Dark Moon's Omen knows why this happened. He was once, after all, closest of all to Smoothstone. He was the longest-lined of any in the Weyr, trusted alone in secret spaces. He saw the careful charts Smoothstone crafted, listing all the Weyr's dragons and whose blood ran where. This, not visions from the Moon Herself, was how Smoothstone declared who could mate with whom.

There had been a mistake. The Dark Moon's Omen, his line, came from a dragon who'd been forced to a second mate. Both hatchlings in the line, their blood intermingling.

He was going to tell everyone, but before he could, he was banished. But he'll gather strength. He'll return.
