Abyss Watchers are rarely seen for they dwell in the deepest parts of the ocean. The faint glow of their belly scutes and the eye-like bulbs that line their fins are used to lure in prey, which they entice within reach of their long, sharp teeth by slowly dimming the lights until those on their head shine the brightest. During early autumn, Abyss Watchers swim to the surface to begin the mating season. Their often sudden appearance can cause panic among nearby humans and other creatures who mistake their eerie glow for spirits or ghosts rising from the depths. Despite their terrifying appearance, they do not intend any harm and spend their time in the surface waters feeding on bioluminescent plankton. This particular food source helps heighten the glow of their lures, which serve a second purpose—blinking patterns of increasing complexity signal they are ready to mate. Only once the mating season ends do they descend again into the ocean depths.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.
