Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Taste-of-Night is a devoted student of Utkena's mystical war-arts, to the point of neglecting his more physical talents. He was rescued and raised by the hermit Saweeka as a hatchling, and this is how he and Utkena first became close. He wishes dearly to win her as a permanent mate, and believes that she will only accept him when he equals or betters her as an arcane warrior. The fact that she is no longer Alpha only fires his hopes that she may one day view him as an equal. She has allowed him to sire eggs on her; he doesn't seem to realize that she hoped that would make him go away. He continues to try ever-more dramatic stunts in order to win her favor.
