Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Corvus is a mischief maker like those of the cheesy stories that parents tell to their hatchlings as they curl up in their nests. He always starts at common pranks, but as his enthusiasm and excitement grows then he finds himself carried away into plots that upset and even harm other dragons. Once he trapped his sister under a cave-in, forgetting that she was mute therefore unable to call for help, and left her there for hours until she was discovered by a search party late into the night. While Elvira, his mother, will swear that his heart is in the right place, others wonder if he is merely using his childish innocence to get away with more ruthless deeds, and even Elvira wonders what she will do on the inevitable day where he goes one step too far. Elvira knows one day he will permanently harm someone, but she just cannot separate the little hatchling who was terrified of leaves falling on him to the deceitful creature that he has become.
