And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Yohouen's parents patrol the fog-bound and storm-ridden Howling Sea, coming to the aid of shipwrecks or those beset by pirates. Although he understands intellectually that their work is dangerous, he's never felt afraid. His earliest memories are of watching terrible storms and complicated rescue operations from the safety of the space between his mother's forepaws. Now that Yohouen has reached hatchlinghood, he helps his parents by carrying a magic ever-bright lantern to help guide lost ships around the treacherous reefs.
