Guardian Dragons have large shields on the end of their tails. Although the shields appear to be heavy, they are light, yet nearly unbreakable. Guardian Dragons use their tail-shields, as well as their wings, to deflect attacks and protect others. Often, they will guard the eggs and hatchlings of a nest while others are away. They are generally peaceful, and will not retaliate unless necessary. They have no need to forage or hunt, as they are fed by those they protect.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Nukeana was born with an abnormally large tail-shield. It's nearly bigger than she is, and it seems to have traded thickness for surface area, like a pizza crust that was rolled too thin. Her shield is so thin and unwieldy that it isn't much use as a shield at all. As a hatchling, Nukeana was even clumsier than normal, unable to walk without tripping over her monstrous tail. She eagerly awaited her wings, believing that she would gain grace in the air... only to discover that her tail creates too much drag. It catches the wind and constantly pulls her off balance. Nukeana was extremely depressed—until she became friends with Fuurou and discovered her talent on the water. With the tail-shield tucked beneath her like a shallow canoe and her wings raised like sails, Nukeana skims across the waves. Nowadays she patrols the Howling Sea east of the Kyokos Vale alongside her mate. Their job is to guide lost ships, provide aid in the case of shipwrecks, and discourage pirates.
