Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Constantly harassed and bullied as a hatchling by Aldith, Donohue has found growing up to be a difficult ordeal and spent most of his hatchling years playing hide-and-seek with the mint dragon Danisha. Now fully grown, he still finds himself the object of Aldith's obsession of proving herself--a position he has mostly resigned himself to. He avoids Aldith whenever possible, preferring to hunt from dusk to the wee hours of dawn. Sometimes he follows Makkarios on his mysterious night hunts, perhaps finding the silent vampire dragon's companionship reassuring. Thus, he remains the only dragon in the clan, aside from the guardian Aylward, to have close contact with the otherwise ignored Makkarios.
