Black Dragons are warriors. They are strong and capable in battles of force, but also ample magic users, capable of devastating opponents with their spells. Their bright eyes give them excellent night vision, which is why they generally hunt during the night.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Bunn is a poor speller and gets her words muddled up, but she is still the best writer in her seven-dragon band, since everyone else is illiterate. Only she feels it's important to write down who they are and what they do, so she takes time off from training to do so. Whenever a learned-looking traveler comes into their territory, Bunn pounces on the opportunity to learn from them and sometimes (rather forcefully) convinces them to give her one of their scrolls or other documents. Many of them have advised her to apply to the Academy to get a basic education, but she's reluctant to leave her group members, with whom she's lived nearly all her life.
