Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Vastitude dislikes terns a lot. When she was a tiny hatchling, one thought she could be a tasty snack, and she barely escaped with limbs intact. Aside from that, she envies their streamlined grace, while she's bulkier and more bumbling. Wherever she goes, there are those seabirds everywhere just asking to be pelted with rocks. So she pelts them with rocks. Vastitude's done this so often that she can hit them in flight. Her ma and da travel frequently, rarely staying somewhere more than a few moons, so she has a lot of new targets to stone, especially during the terns' breeding seasons. By the time the family moves again, there are no more birds in the area for the time being, either killed and eaten or scared away. Vastitude is thorough with her revenge quest, leaving no tern unstoned.
