Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Put on a Grave Face plays with her food. This annoys her father a lot, since when the ember dragons return to their nests to find everything's been scattered around, they blame him for bad parenting. Put on a Grave Face also wanders into the towns and villages to eat the remnants in fireplaces and under pots. Some humans go "Aw", while many others are tempted to kill her so she won't become a terror later.
