Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Summer Sun was born with a rare disease called Wingamouse, more commonly known as Wing Death. If Summer Sun had grown wings, he would have died. Because he never matured, Summer Sun is neither a boy nor a girl, but most assume he would have been a boy. Summer Sun loves to play with other hatchlings, but he is always sad when they grow up and he does not. He can't play many hatchling games, like Air Soccer, or Sky Tag, because he has no wings, and he can't play water games because he can't hold his breath like the other water dragons can. Whenever she can, Molybdenum plays with him, but he still longs for other playmates. He lives with his mother, Goldie, and often they spend long hours talking in the shade.
