Black Truffle Dragons are one of the rarest breeds—though this was not always the case. Once, these dragons were quite prolific, but their musky-smelling secretions were found to be useful in the making of perfumes and scented oils, leading the dragons to be hunted near the point of extinction. Now, these dragons live far away from humans and will only share their oil with those they deem worthy of this gift, those possessing a pure heart and selfless spirit.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. Truff Around the Edges writes short stories, which are passed around among her community members. Those who really like her work trade food, mana, and other goods for a copy. She is a born wanderer, but she is also a born go-home-after-enough-excitement-from-wandering-er. While happy to stay put in the same cave with the same housemates, once in a while, she'll have an irresistible urge to walk out in an arbitrarily-chosen direction and will remain on the trip for as short as a couple of hours to possibly a decade or longer. Truff returns with more ideas for her stories. The first thing she usually says upon seeing her neighbors and cave again is, "HOW I'VE MISSED YOU". Truff's housemates have mostly resigned to her decision to go out for who-knows-how-long. They are happy to see her when she returns and regales them, but they also do not worry about her while she's gone.
