Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It enjoys swimming in a nearby pond.

And look! Its fins and tail have gotten bigger, and you’ve moved it to a larger body of water to swim in. It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Whirlpoole is one of Phoenix's dragons. He is one of the more playful of the frozen hatchlings, in spite of his narrow escape from death. He had an hour to live, but luckily he was rescued by some friends. His fate was chosen to be frozen however, so Phoenix wouldn't have minded if he hadn't grown his fins in time and was frozen without them.

Whirlpoole knows he is, in a sense, a veteran in the fight against death. All the other hatchlings adore and respect him for it, as well as the adults, though he is among the youngest of them.
