Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Gleiro is one of the harsher members of the Unlucky Thirteen. Cursing his parents endlessly for not letting him ascend to adulthood, he feels betrayed and despised by those who are supposed to love him. He cares not about his privileged childhood compared to some other members of the group, nor that will he always have devoted parents to support him when he needs them most. His true family he shunned long ago, blaming them for his frozen state, and while the Unlucky Thirteen accept him as a member, they feel he is wasting the opportunity for love he has, playing the martyr for his own sake. Gleiro will never again talk to Em after she attempted to reconcile him with his parents, even though she only wanted to give him what herself and so many others had been robbed of. While his parents felt bad at first, their regret was soon lost under the resentment and hatred they felt radiating from their son, and soon dropped all attempts at contact.
