Paper Dragons are not truly living creatures. They are pieces of parchment enchanted by magic, and as such, are very vulnerable to fire. However, they behave almost like dragons. The only place where their behavior differs is breeding: paper dragons cannot breed.

It has been said that if a book is well loved, one day it may come to life. Or that's what Nanao says whenever she's asked about where she came from. In truth, she doesn't know why she isn't alive like the rest of the dragons in Nadat's cave, but it doesn't bother her.

Nanao is happy to spend sunny days on a rock near the cave, basking in the warmth and enjoying a good book stolen from surprised villagers. Stormy and gray days she spends inside, but still reading (and avoiding KatenKyoukotsu, the shameless flirt of the cave. On occasion, she will thwack KatenKyoukotsu with any nearby book.)

She amuses herself by telling hatchlings that she came from a book and watching them come to love to read while they try to make another dragon like her.
