Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Nurni is a young garland with no worries in life, as her caretakers intend. She enjoys doing anything that doesn't require her to leave her barn rafters: studying maps, reading magic books and manuscripts, reading ordinary stories, talking at the cows, and eating nearby hay and grain. Her guardians see a lot of potential in her, and while they want her to be able to do whatever she wants to do without trouble in the future, they also hope she won't forget the farm and will return and bring blessings to the land.
