And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Humans. Only humans can create a complicated language with a bunch of symbols and squiggles and arbitrary rules concerning spelling and pronunciation. Starling Sliver spent years learning just to impress the humans, only for them to still criticize the way he writes. They point out that, for example, he spelled his name wrong, except sometimes they agree that he actually didn't. But it really is misspelled. Maybe. Sort of. He's too nice to demand an actual answer out of the humans who are too polite or scared to be bluntly honest to a dragon, even a hatchling.
