Lunar Heralds are deeply attuned to the two moons of Valkemare, Aurax and Cirion. Strictly nocturnal, they draw energy from moonlight and will only hunt when the moons have waned. When breeding, the amount of moonlight the parents receive from each moon will determine the color of the egg produced. When a Lunar Herald is struck by direct moonlight, an illusion of multiple wings may appear. Witnessing a Lunar Herald’s illusory wings is commonly believed to be a sign of good fortune.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Harold wants to fly to the moon. Either moon is fine, but the closer ("bigger") one is preferred. He doesn't know anything about astronomy or space survival. In fact, he thinks that the stars in the sky are white drops of mammal perspiration and that everybody who tells him he's wrong, especially those nebula dragons, are liars. Harold has made many attempts to leave Valkemare and head to one of the moons, but he can never remember why he fails. He'll wake up with wounds and no memory of the past few minutes, being tended to by a dragon or few which can only mean those dragons also don't want him to go to the moon. It seems everyone wants to make an enemy of him.
