Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Jelna dislikes negative feelings, especially any directed at him. Whenever someone complains to him, he'll shoot back, "That's not how you really feel!", whether true or not. At his young age, he hasn't figured out how to make adults feel better, and he usually knows when they're only pretending to be in a better mood. When it comes to other hatchlings, all Jelna has to do is to tell them how cool and smart and strong they are, or give them what they want, if possible.
