Skywing Dragons spend most of their lives flying in the air. They hunt from the air, diving at prey from above, and land only to rest. They are some of the fastest fliers, capable of extremely high speeds. The webbing at the end of the tail acts as a rudder, allowing them to easily change direction during flight.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Kaimana Kalani is the "classic beauty" of the female dragons in the cave. Meaning "ocean sky" in Hawaiian, Kaimana Kalani loves to soar through the sky, personifying grace with every turn. The male dragons attempt to court her often, but not even "Sanjiva the Womanizer" can capture her attentions. Kaimana Kalani treasures her freedom more than a mate, which is expressed by the deftness of her wings and the beauty of her flight. Kaimana Kalani is one of the feistier females- a male hoping to win her over must first survive her sharp tongue and wit. Despite her lack of interest in a mate, Kaimana hopes to someday fly with other dragons of her type, a hope that leads her to badger her master for other Skywing eggs. Kaimana has no steady friendships with the other dragons, but she is most friendly with Lestari Shizuka.
