Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It has a slick, oily feeling hide.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Bluff will always be the new one in the cave network, as the most recent member to join. She lives in a little cave with a neighbor, her "Auntie S", whose work she doesn't understand at all, who has all these papers and books and magic whats-its that she is advised not to touch. She happily complies. The last time a stray wind (coming from inside the cave somehow) blew a wet, leafy scrap at her face, her snout turned into a crispy substance that itched and slowly crumbled before her eyes. Rather than quickly do something, Auntie S took note of the effects Bluff's oils had on the potion-dipped pellet. Once her nose was turned back, she needed medical attention. Bluff learned to stay clear of the straight tunnel leading to that chamber, as her other neighbors do. Despite complaining often about being an accidental experiment, she has grown curious about studying magic, particularly potions, and rarely comes up with (admittedly flimsy) excuses to visit Auntie S and watch her work.
