Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Before he succumbed to the eternal sleep, Morpheus always used to talk about the strange figures he saw in his dreams, leading him to alien lands where life was very different to that of the caves. He would wake up in the middle of the night, tossing with anguish as he muttered about the worlds where the sky was purple and there were four suns circling in the sky. His carers brought him to healer after healer, but no matter how strong the sleep tonic that he consumed, his subconscious mind would still return to the lands of eight legged sheep and trees that danced at the slightest sound. One day, he started to mention a new figure, who was short and stout, with a grin like that of the Cheshire cat. On that fateful night, Morpheus made up his mind to follow the new figure, whose pathway always seemed to curve round in confusing circles, despite previously refusing to follow the figure who Morpheus suspected did not originate from his dreams. Morpheus has yet to wake up.
