Sunstone Dragons are named after the orb on their tails, which resembles the gem of the same name. Their social structure resembles a lion pride, with one dominant male and several females banded together with their young. They prefer arid climates where they can blend in and dig for minerals and gemstones that they not only collect, but eat. The more gems they consume, the larger their tail stone grows. They are an aggressive breed; it is not uncommon to see two males battling for mates and territory.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Ambr spends her entire year awaiting the warmth and joy that comes with summer. The happiness in everyone's eyes as they haul themselves down to the beach, the warm sun radiating heat down on one's back and the true colours of the world springing up from the surroundings are what makes the season so special for her. The contrast between this season, and winter, when everyone is huddled around the dying embers of a fire too cold to even reach for more wood, compared to the relaxing late night walks of summer increases Ambr's loathing of winter even more, as she wishes the icy wind will never blow past their home. While she knows that the yearly chills are unstoppable and nothing she can do will prevent them, Ambr will spend the autumn busily preparing to make winter as bearable as possible. She will drag in tons of firewood, line the cave walls with golden scales and knit woolly hats and scarves for hours on end, in hope that it will make a difference.
