Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Rosebud was ordained to never grow up from the moment his lineage was revealed. It might have been for the better since he was so lazy and refused to hunt for himself. With his small size he isn't that much of a burden to the rest of this cave. In fact, since it looks like he is still a hatchling, Mayapple sometimes even gives him treats. A rumor says that the only reason he was raised, was in hope that he would be different from other vines.
