Fire Gem Dragons are a colorful, flamboyant breed often found in hot climates, particularly around active volcanoes. Their broad tails store the flames they breathe, which are colored by the heavy amount of minerals in the water they drink. These dragons come in a variety of colors, and will collect shiny trinkets and stones that match their own coloration. Despite their hoarding tendencies, though, Fire Gem dragons are social and will often congregate in groups and show off their collections while fawning over the stones their friends and rivals have gathered, occasionally arranging trades.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Chargeback is one of the handlers of head-of-state Lamb-Ears Spunk the Smart, who is an actual head in a jar. Lamb-Ears was elected as leader during a time of strife, when Chargeback was a child. In her next two terms, the leader enacted programs that benefitted the majority of the dragon and human citizens, reorganized the military, streamlined how natural resources are gathered and processed, and reminded everyone that they're good people and she wishes them the best. Then she was beheaded by someone who apparently didn't like her. The magic people were able to revive Lamb-Ears, and she was reelected shortly after, so she continues to serve as leader, now in a jar of Magic Stuff. Because adolescent Chargeback was the one who went after and roasted the killer (in multiple senses of the word), she was offered the job of being one of the leader's handlers, carrying her around to meetings and such. She proudly performs her work, and she's learned a lot about government business as well.
