Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

Hibberd is a playful little hatchling, treated as a puppy by his owners who don't know how to raise a drake. In the morning, he runs around, flips his mat over, and sticks his snout in their sleeping faces. On walks, they wonder if he's envious of the wild drakes who run and fly around freely, or if he understands that the tradeoff is a harsher life where food isn't guaranteed. Hibberd is housebroken, but only in his house. Whenever he goes with his humans to their friend or family's home, the first thing he does after determining the place is safe is take a dump. Embarrassed apologies always follow as they rush to get the mess cleaned up.
