Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Shell Trap carries a shell wherever he goes. It's almost as heavy as he is, and he uses it to hit people whom he thinks is a threat or tells him to do things he doesn't want to do, yet it's not yet clear to his caregivers that he can understand anything they say to him. People say that Shell Trap was "blessed" by the undines. Even telepathically, the scare quotes are clearly there.
