Coastal Waverunners spend most of their time skimming the waves along the coast, snatching up their prey from the shallow waters. They have developed markings along the leading edges of their body that help disguise them as breaking waves. When they are not hunting, they enjoy playing among sand-dunes and shallow tide-pools. These dragons live in small but noisy rookeries. Some stories say Waverunners can fly for days on end without landing.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Sapphire Tides' name fits her perfectly: like the tides, she is one to "go with the flow" and not question anything, sometimes proving disastrous. In fact, this is how she came to live with her current cavemates. As a hatchling, she lived in a cave with a bloodthirsty, power-hungry leader, who began to enact laws to destroy the weakest of the cave in a plot to take over the nearby caves. Her mother, father and twin sister were killed by her former leader, and yet she did not question. It was just before her turn to be killed when she realized the wrongness of his actions. With the help of a whiptail dragon, she was able to escape this fate.

Now, Sapphire Tides lives in a loving cave with Black Gaze, a wise and kind leader who cares for any and all dragons. She lost one of her eggs to a vampire, but is still trying to raise the family she never had by taking care of the water-type dragons and hatchlings.
