This hatchling appears to be... dead?

Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Bloodsucking Mess was an extremely messy eater when he arrived at the crypt-weyr of Hellish Katrina Undead, appalling her personal sense of decorum. She assigned a series of her minions to the task of teaching him proper Vampire dining manners, but he seemed to be getting worse, despite each teacher's best efforts.  Finally, Katrina tried teaching him directly.  After a long and trying session, her pupil smeared with blood, guts, and drool, she became so enraged that she blasted him with the Minimus spell, stopping his growth, and hopefully, limiting his obnoxious appetite.

Mess doesn't mind, because now they leave him to eat his meals in peace.
