Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Jump in the Night does not go bump in the night. There seems to have been some confusion about what the adults do to make overtures to each other and to make babies. He thinks they hop around to show that they are quite fit, despite hanging around in the dark all the time. The other day, Jump in the Night saw this ambitious girl with pretty horns and eyes, and he tried to impress her by leaping like a frog when she went to his cave. She wasn't any more attracted to him, but they became friends anyway.
