Turpentine Dragons are named for the oil that covers their scales. This oil resembles turpentine in odor and is mildly toxic; it will not kill but it burns to the touch and will cause illness in anyone who ingests it. Turpentine Dragons roam in large packs, often stealing food from larger dragons, though they are able to hunt for themselves if necessary. Many other breeds consider Turpentine Dragons to be pests, so they primarily breed among themselves.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Aromatize is a glutton for punishment and takes the most challenging duties among her group—the ones where an accident could snap her small frame in two—and she has been in so many unfortunate incidents that the resident healer wonders if she should just follow Aromatize around. Their little community is composed of many scary or disliked breeds and welcomes every friendly dragon, but there are still important rules to follow, such as "5.) In Public Areas, No Setting ANYTHING Outside the Designated Fire Zone on Fire". Because of that, once a month or so, Aromatize accompanies her partner to the volcanic plains to help him collect burnt debris to eat. When she and the grave have nothing better to do, they retreat to their private mana-lit den to cuddle. Aromatize is very pleased that she's met someone who doesn't mind the burning sensation of her oily scales, and she in turn enjoys getting raked by his claws, which he usually does when he forgets himself.
