Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

"Copy Catter" is a nickname given by this little one's colleagues due to his ability to copy their voices better than anyone else can. They use it in place of his name even in front of the adults, to the mild annoyance of their teachers. He is a little confused that the grown-ups don't understand why he's called Copy Catter. A Copy Catter is someone who copies others. That ought to be clear to them, and he knows this is the correct terminology because that's what all of the other hatchlings say. Though a bookish and diligent student, sometimes Copy Catter wonders if he's being taught the right things and wonders if the adults really know how to prioritize. They seem to worry a lot about things he finds inconsequential, like social standing and fractions.
