Black Truffle Dragons are one of the rarest breeds—though this was not always the case. Once, these dragons were quite prolific, but their musky-smelling secretions were found to be useful in the making of perfumes and scented oils, leading the dragons to be hunted near the point of extinction. Now, these dragons live far away from humans and will only share their oil with those they deem worthy of this gift, those possessing a pure heart and selfless spirit.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Affectionately called 'Truffle,' this dragon is Kaini's assistant in the kitchen. Kai discovered a long time ago that the oil the Black Truffle dragons produce was good for cooking, and set off to find some via the dragon she'd befriended. Truffle was curious when Kai asked her if she'd share—cooking sounds fun.

Truffle granted Kai the use of her oil with the provision that Kai teach her to cook as well. Her methods are of course a bit different—Kai has a kitchen and Truffle has a fire pit, but the principles are the same. In the kitchen Truffle learned the basics, and still helps Kai prepare human meals from time to time.

Mostly Truffle cooks for the other dragons, though, roasting her kills over the fire. Kai provides her with a variety of spices and greens to make her dishes, and in exchange she continues to provide her oil.
