Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Harlon was able to become incorporeal when he was less than a year old, and it was probably his curiosity and fascination with this ability that compelled him to continue practicing until he was as good as his father. His guardians were impressed when he first managed to phase out, but they would not call it a "blessing", at least not for them. Harlon uses his ghosting talent to flee from his three caretakers, none of them able to leave the physical plane, whenever it's time to do anything he doesn't want to do. Even if the adults figure out where he's hiding, they can't drag him from his hiding spot lest he become upset and lose concentration, becoming solid again within a solid object.
