Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It occasionally shoots small puffs of smoke from its nose, like it’s trying to breathe fire.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

What the Dickens' father loved to interact with humans, in the kidnapping-royalty sort of way, or more precisely, "kidnapping" royalty. It's become a tradition for the humans living in a 50 kilometer radius to "rescue" the person he kidnapped, then sit down for tea and a chat. The humans knew of the dragon that lived in the abandoned castle in the mountains but didn't know he had a spouse and definitely didn't know they had a son. When a group of them saw the tiny yowling hatchling for the first time, one blurted, in more of an exclamation than a question, "What the dickens is this!" What the Dickens is grumbly over being named after human chatter, but he knows other hatchlings with much weirder names.
