Skywing Dragons spend most of their lives flying in the air. They hunt from the air, diving at prey from above, and land only to rest. They are some of the fastest fliers, capable of extremely high speeds. The webbing at the end of the tail acts as a rudder, allowing them to easily change direction during flight.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Dark Gring, through no planning of her own, is the division's appointed Sky Inspector. There has been a problem with various individuals taking to the air and pretending to be grander things, typically through illusions and costumes coupled with bombastic telepathic speeches. Dark Gring, a breed who flies near-constantly, was the perfect choice for the job of investigating those in the sky, to see if their claims hold water. She is absentminded and inarticulate, but she is very observant and honest in a way that no one else is. The worst of the pretenders, and Dark Gring's first "unmasking", was an ordinary lumina who posed as The Guardian of Nature for over a year, remaining high in the sky and enjoying others' deference and gifts. His masquerade was foiled by accident when Dark Gring bumped into the deus guise, and his makeup ran and part of his illusion vanished. Pointing at the so-called GoN, she declared to observers on the ground, "Hey! Dis guy's in disguise in da skies!"
