Young drakes are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own.

To most listeners, all of Luaan Ti's gurgles and chirps are gibberish, but to humans that speak a certain language, he appears to be counting to eight. They find that adorable. Someone trained the little drake to do this and nothing else. He can't "sit" or "heel" or "chase"—basic commands for an obedient pet—only "count". It really isn't counting, of course, just making specific noises on command. The draconic observers of the town think the humans don't have their priorities in order.
