Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

For a member of the Unlucky Thirteen, Em has a remarkably positive attitude. The fact that she was unfairly frozen in youth has no effect on her sweet temperate of positive outlook, unlike the other members of her group. None can see why; her tragic tale of abandonment, struggles in the early days of the clans and then being forced into eternal youth would drive many to tears, but Em seems unaware of her life story, as she simply plods on with daily life as happily as a dragon could be. It has been speculated that Em does not feel the effects of being frozen before she gendered simply because she was born with wings, and her confident attitude allowing her to easily accept the gender of female without worrying what anyone else would think. These days she rarely uses her wings, unwilling to make her closest friends jealous of what they will never have, and while she does not feel guilty for what she has, she takes extra efforts in order to fight off envy.
