Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Erj's goal in life is to bake bread. When he's older and abler, he wants to figure out the step-by-step to make a variety of different bread variations. At the very least, he wants to be able to bake the egg-shaped honey bread that this traveling human once gave to him as a gift. He figures the human was eaten or lost his mind during his travels, which is why he never visited Erj again despite saying he would "try to visit again one day", and this deeply saddens Erj because that honey bread was so delicious, and now without a mentor, he doesn't know where to even begin to bake it and it's so sweet and good and he gets so excited thinking about becoming a master baker of honey bread in the future that his thoughts and speech melt into a single stream of consciousness that very quickly tires listeners.
