Sunbeam Drakes are the diurnal counterparts to Moonglow Drakes, their eggs having been laid during the daylight hours. They are around the size of a small dog, and while docile, can be flighty and easily startled. Most can be found high in treetops enjoying the bright sunlight, tucking themselves away at the first sign of a storm or impending nightfall. Sunbeam Drakes enjoy flying in the light of the sun, and their treetop dances are beautiful, dazzling, and serene.

Though it may appear at first that dragons and drakes have much in common, the two are completely separate species. Drakes are smaller and less intelligent than their cousin species, though both dragons and drakes sit comfortably near the top of the food chain. They are always found bearing antlers and leathery wings. Drakes share many of the same habitats that dragons do, and typically hunt in packs.

Avan is a playful and curious drak. His curiosity has led him astray from his parents. He has stumbled upon a large village and gets along with the humans who live there. The humans swoon over his beauty, feed him and give him shelter, and he is bonded with most of them. At the moment, Avan lives with Heatheat and has become friends with her dog and another dragon who lives with her—a gold tinsel named Palmari Tai. The two dragons communicate with each other through telepathy, and Avan playfully wrestles with almost everyone. Avan likes to claw at Heatheat and play fetch, which is a bit like a competition with the dog. Avan has excitedly showed his parents his new habitat, wishing that they would visit him often. Instead they usually try to convince Avan to live with them again.
