When Water Dragons mature, they lose the ability to survive on land, entering the water permanently. They are adept swimmers and eat whatever fish are in the lake they live in. They tend to inhabit the same lake for their entire lives, although a few live in the ocean and swim all over the world.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Nocuvar (her name means "deep change" in ancient draconic) lives in a tunnel in Lake Hydrani so deep, not even she has seen its bottom.  The water there is so deep that no light penetrates, and the darkness is also found in Nocuvar's heart.  In addition, the tunnel has powerful magic absorbed into the water within, and because Nocuvar is innately magical, she can harness the tunnel's power for her own dark uses.

     Because Nocuvar is wingless, most dragons assume she is pro-mint in the war.  However, Nocuvar knows that her home is too deep for the winged dragons to affect, so she has planned to do nothing to aid the mint royalty, or her parents and brother.  Because there is one thing Nocuvar agrees with the winged dragons on: land is worthless.
