Vampire Dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only “alive” at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire Dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside.

Dragons are highly-intelligent reptilian creatures that—from a human perspective, at least—appear to live forever. Many different varieties of dragon exist, each with their own unique qualities, habitats, and behavior. Adolescence in dragons is usually marked by the growth of a hatchling’s wings, although not all breeds of dragons grow wings and some breeds have other traits that indicate the beginning of maturation. In Galsreim, dragons and humans coexist peacefully.

Halo is the leader of her clan, Von Ripper, named because its founder was a savage. She was one day bitten by Jack Von Ripper and he and her egg were taken into The Bloody Matron's coven, where Halo was raised by Sharath. In those days, Sharath was yet to pass her initiation test, and so was part of the Von Ripper clan. Sharath was trained by Matron, and Sharath in turn trained Halo. She taught Halo to show no mercy and to be careful and calculating in battle, rather than vicious and out of control. Though Jack founded the Von Ripper clan, Halo is the leader, as she is far more intelligent and cunning than Jack. She believes that with a combination of brute strength and cunning plans, her clan shall be unstoppable. She calls Jack a dullard, and says it's his savagery that stops her clan from growing.
