Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It hides in dark spaces and lunges at anything that gets too close. Small piles of bones are accumulating outside of its “lairs”...

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Young dragons are relatively defenseless. They are born with relatively soft scales, which are shed and replaced with harder ones as the hatchling matures. Once a hatchling’s wings grow in, it typically marks the beginning of maturation. At this point they are often capable of hunting on their own and are usually left alone by their mother.

Babylon Five is the smallest of the lurkers in Lagie's caves, an eternal hatchling, but that doesn't stop her from launching herself at prey larger than she is. Her most memorable attempt was at a very large grizzly bear that happened to stroll past the entrance to B5's cave. Unfortunately, it proved to be too much of an effort, but many of the other lurkers came to assist, so the bear was eventually vanquished. Each of the lurkers grabbed a large mouthful, some prefering the bones, and some the gristly bits in between. It was a grisly scene for many hours while all the lurkers devoured their prize, and the stench lingered for weeks. The botched effort hasn't stopped B5, though; she still launches herself out at anything that passes by.
